It looks that when dictation is active in Mavericks, all system audio is muted and iTunes is paused. I can understand the reason is to make the environment as quiet as possible for the speech recognition to do it's magic. I'm making an application where the user has to listen to audio via headphones and dictate text into the microphone. Is there a way to unmute the sound disabled by the dictation process?
From poking around it looks like the default output device volume is nonzero and the mute flag is off. The system believes that the sound is playing, while the headphones are silent. AudioHijack can capture the sound and save it into a file, which does not help me, but it's an indication that the sound _is_ playing and it's not reaching the output device. How is that possible?
