Realtime AC3 encoding and output

  • Subject: Realtime AC3 encoding and output

Salutations,

I’ve written a user-space loopback audio device (based on Apple’s NullAudio sample) and a real-time AC3 encoder and SPDIF muxer application (with libraries from FFmpeg) using Core Audio, so that one can (in real-time) output 5.1 discrete channels through a nominally 2-channel digital connection on AC3-decoding audio receiver.

As the documentation on many of these subjects (AudioServerPlugIn, compressed audio formats, synchronising unrelated input and output devices, …) can be quite sparse I’ve also published the source-code at https://github.com/q-p/SoundPusher, as this is a project I’ve been doing for my own edification.

I’m no particular expert at any of this, but it seems to work for me. If anyone has any suggestions for improvements or issues, feel free to report them (or even provide patches) via the GitHub page.

Take care,
	Daniel.
