Is there a way to play to an audio device from a daemon process and to not lose playback when logging in as a different user or using fast user switching?
I find that playback stops when switching users, and continues when switching back. Prior to OS 10.8 playback continues no matter what, but from there on it stops when switching away from the user that was active at the time of playback. The device continues to show as active, but there is no sound output.
The daemon process is using the Core Audio “AudioObject” API and is playing to a specific device rather than the default output. It makes no difference whether playing to the built-in device or an external one.
The daemon is started by launchd at boot time and runs before any user logs in.
