 The results on OSX might be related to block size. However according to tests I've seen, the optimal block size for spinning disks (in general, not OS-specific) is somewhere between 64k and 256k. I can dig out the paper if anyone is interested.

Not any more Ross :) That is the blocksize used by current releases of ardour (256kB) but this testing process has forced us to increase this for the next release. 256kB is far, far from optimal on all systems we've tested so far.
