I've made a streaming engine on OSX as well and I have noticed a weird cache use indeed.
What was weird about it?
As far as I remember I noticed very slow access from time to time.
And but not really related to my streaming experience, OSX tends to
cache files in RAM a lot and rarely purge those and at some point run
out of RAM
and does a lot of disk swapping. This is especially true in Xcode
