Hi Marc,

hi,

I have problem that my G5 (a 1st generation Dual 1.8 and 2nd generation Dual 2.5) USB and Firewire are dead after running our software for a very longtime. (see description below)

Question 1:
I'm wondering what could have caused this problem?

Question 2:
If I could add something to my source code to prevent this from happening, like polling the USB and the Firewire device through IOKit.

Question 3:
Also could i add code to my application to wake up the USB and Firewire?

The problem never happens on a G4 so it must something specific with the G5 IOKit drivers.

Detailed Description of the problem: ====================================

We have written a software that transfers video data (2vuy) format to the Decklink card through the QuickTime API and and uses coreAudio output Audio Unit's for the sound. All this happens in threads!!!!
We intend to build broadcast solution based on the Decklink card. When we use this system for a very long time (12 hours or more...) we noticed that sometimes on a G5 system (currently never happend on a G4) the USB bus and Firewire bus are not active anymore. When I plugin an iPod the iPod doesn't mount, when i try to attach keyboard the keyboard isn't active or the mouse doesn't get current( no lights in the mouse) etc...

Sometimes it doesn't happen for 24 hours, so it is random. The ethernet cable is still working because in System Log i see the information unplugging/plug in appearing, I can still access the machine remotely. I can access the files. My program still runs fine, the clock still keeps on ticking, the fans of the G5 still keeps on working etc.

So I'm wondering if the driver of the Decklink card could have caused this?

As anyone else seen this kind of problems on a G5 system maybe with different software.

This is a difficult enough problem that you might want to submit this as a developer tech support incident. If you're not familiar with that, please see the URL in my email signature. The odds of figuring this out on the mailing list aren't good.

Have you looked in the system log (/var/log/system.log or use /Applications/Utilities/Console.app) for any errors?

For the USB case, you can install a logging version of the USB family to get more details about when the failure occurs. See <http://developer.apple.com/hardware/usb/usbloggers.htm>.

It's possible the Decklink driver is the issue, just not enough info here to give more than a guess.
