I'd think so, since you'd be using the bind9 library, but I can't say whether you'd notice the difference. -DBIND_8_COMPAT lets your code use the compatibility routines built in to libSystem. In Darwin 7.0, the resolver code was updated to bind9 and pulled out into its own dylib.
