Greetings:
I explained the problem I'm having in the General Discussion area, as the situation has not changed I'm posting it here:

I am familiar with CUPS from my extensive use of it within Yellow Dog Linux.
However, using CUPS within OS X is becoming a challenge. So here I am.
My troubles are:
CUPS won't let me login to modify the printer settings, configure the printer or anything else. I tried root, my name, the short name, all in combination with the administrative password for the computer. All my other settings elsewhere are fine.
Configuring printer problem. I need to download and install a new CUPS driver as the one in use for my printer (provided standard) is old and doesn't utilize the full formatting capacity of the printer.
I can print nearly anything but not from within vim via the hardcopy command. I like developing and working with problems using 128bits while everyone else harps on the wonders of 64. And as I use vim a lot that is a problem. I tried a quick fix using a soft link between lp0 and null, but that did not work. I did run into a similar problem within Linux but I was eventually able to resolve that myself as I had full access to EVERYTHING down to the source. I obviously don't have that in OS X, so I'm really hoping that there is a workaround.
I would appreciate whatever help I can get.

The replies I received essentially offered a resolution I found unappealing download and install a program which would allow me to control my printer from CUPS but it would also interfere with Apple's Security protocols. Not acceptable. I went back to studying CUPS and noticed that a Bluetooth printer exists as a fax which is surprising as I have no such thing. Yet commands from the Terminal and from within vim to print a document are sent to this "bluetooth" printer.
I tried creating a soft link between /dev/cu (the bluetooth printer) and lp0 (I was trying to trick the stream to send the jobs to the printer I DO have) so that I could get a printout but that didn't work. Somehow nothing really obviously simple does, maybe I'm looking in the wrong direction? I know vim is not the problem; up to the most recent update everything was fine.
I also noticed one other oddity; the printer (deskjet 6122) no longer does duplex (2-sided) printing even when all the options for it to do so are selected! There is also the odd option that although the option Two-sided printing may be selected, the Layout option shows Two-sided printing as unavailable. My deskjet IS capable of duplex printing as it has the duplex module in it. Again something in Apple's recent update could be the culprit... as I now cannot do duplex work within MacOS X either.
Any ideas????
Thanks for your time....
Ciao for now... _______________________________________________
