I thought he said he wanted a picture of the "text console". There's
no Finder, no help menu, no UI at all in that case. It's the Darwin
text console and there is no way of taking a snapshot of it.

I did not think that your request was for anything as simple as a
screenshot of the desktop. It is always the simplest things that
befuddle us, or at least me.
If you go to the help menu in the Finder and type something like,
"snapshot of screen". One of the possible options which come up is
"Taking a picture of your entire screen". The explanation
continues with the use of the Grab application.
And yes, when such a snapshot is taken the pixels are included
which can be brought to glorious magnification via the use of
GraphiConverter which can open Grab's output and import it for
manipulation as you please. GraphiConverter can also be used to
narrow the screen image to your area of interest, but you probably
already knew that.
However, if you want the location and placement of each pixel
identified as you work with it; you are probably aware that
GraphiConverter contains a pixel map. It has lots of features
which are quite useful depending on what you intend. As usual, the
nature of the task you are setting or have set, will determine if
these tools are enough, or insufficient.
Best wishes...

Is there any reasonable way to get a screenshot of the text

Not just the text, but the actual pixels?
