I think you've misunderstood the reason for the question.
My actual goal is to have a screenshot of "the text console", to
put in a
book.
It is not to decide what the best way to run a desktop is.
Why not just take a photo? With a bit of care to set things up you
should be able to get an image of good enough quality for print, in a
lot less time than various other suggestions ;)
