Why not just use pam_krb5. The KDC is synchronized with Password Server.
Or pam_ldap, assuming it supports SASL CRAM-MD5 binds (not sure).
I typically use nss_ldap and pam_krb5 when integrating linux or Solaris
with Open Directory.
Not that pam_passwordserver wouldn't be cool.
