I will follow the steps that you mentioned.
My patch is compatible with darwinbuild.

I put my patch inside a file:
/usr/local/darwinbuild/Sources/diskdev_cmds-277.4-patches.tar.gz

and then I built the diskdev_cmds package using
the darwinbuild script (no mean feat!).

Since my patch comes from the FreeBSD mount_nfs, I will
submit it to Apple via Radar, since it solved
a legitimate interoperability problem for me.

My automount patch is a separate issue.
