You have a tough job ahead of you if you don't understand that none of
the systems you mention have "native floating point number
representations". In all cases, what determines the representation is
the hardware, not the OS.
Sun's RPC/XDR protocol deals with floats, if memory serves. It sounds
like you want to use it.
