Copy it from a HFS+ volume to a UFS volume using the Finder (or CpMac?).

- to extract a ._ resource fork file from a .pax.gz file so that I can have a look at its data.

Again, use a non fork aware volume; or a non fork aware version of pax (on your 10.2 installation, for example).
