Why do you need to use the deprecated syslog(3) APIs for this?
Probably because I need to be 10.2 compatible.
If you have to do this with the same binary, then yes, that's
something of a barrier to adoption.
Just out of curiosity, is there a darwin tool using asl? It could
prove interesting to see how this shall be used.
In Tiger, the primary goal was to provide the APIs and evangelize
them at WWDC. In Leopard, we'll be using them in a lot more darwin
projects. Unfortunately, that doesn't give you a lot of examples to
work from right now. Fortunately, the asl(3) man page is very good
and provides code examples, so this isn't a big deal. You can also
use syslog(1) to query the results and simulate logging from various
types of applications.
