Verify that it is your build that is slowing things down, to start
with. Use 'top' to see what the high runners are, and to see what
the disk activity looks like.
You can use 'top' to watch as your build proceeds, to see what looks
to be taking the time, if the above doesn't point out a culprit.
Are you building C? C++? Templates?

I don't think anything else is slowing the system down. I use it for
other things besides building and it seems to be responsive. I am
building in C++. The code defines a few templates, not a lot, and it
does use the STL quite a bit.
