Sending events to MenuExtras?

I have a NSMenuExtra (I know its private, I inherited the code) with a few menu items.

I want to know if it is possible for another application to send the menu an event to activate one of the choices, basically to simulate a user clicking on one of the menu items and have it perform the action associated with it. In essence I want to generate a click event for that menu item programatically.

If yes, then how would I do this?  what is the target for the apple event?
