Hmmm ... but I don't call bootstrap_register() myself. I call CFMessagePortCreateLocal(), which calls bootstrap_register() (give or take a few intervening frames). There doesn't seem to be any alternative to calling CFMessagePortCreateLocal(), nor any hint in the dox at that level as to why it might call *_register() vice *_check_in().
