I'm going to jump in on the Backup Bouncer testsuite bandwagon too, but with a question; have you tested rdiff-backup? (http:// www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/) A coworker that uses Linux told me about it, but I haven't had a chance yet to build it and test it.

Actually, here is a really simple backup question; have you used hdiutil to image a drive, and asr to scan it, and then tested that?
