Philip --Since my post, I've also found that tracking /Volumes in a kevent entry is a workable substitute for my needs, so problem solved.
Tracking /Volumes will not work if a network share or some other disk is mounted somewhere other than /Volumes. It would be best to use the DiskArbitration API to make sure you see all the mounts out there, regardless of where they are mounted.
