You can do that with aliases, which are part of the CoreServices framework.

Do you have a reference to example, or the necessary documentation? When searching for aliases I keep seeing stuff on the 'physical' alias you see in the finder, rather than the virtual alias which you seem to be referring to. Either that, or there is something I am not understanding.
