Ha, good one, you almost had me there. If Apple had reserved
the .alias extension for alias files (as much as Apple can reserve a
file extension) then it would be there as a file extension for
kUTTypeAliasFile in the UTI APIs.

And they might not be using that extension on non-alias files... :-)
