In general, you'd backup the contents of the alias file, not what it
points to, because there's no guarantee that you can resolve the alias
-- it might be to an item on a file server that isn't accessible, or
to an un-mounted local disk, or to an item that you'd need a password
from the user to resolve, or even be an alias to an item which has
been deleted.
