I have a Powermac G4 MDD running OS X 10.4.11. It has the SSH service enabled.
If I connect using ssh to my computer at home from work, I have a really bad connection. It feels unresponsive, sometimes hangs for some seconds etc. Logins are sometimes quick, sometimes really slow. When I type something, it takes time for the characters to appear on my screen.
My router at home has port 222 open for ssh service, and this port is forwarded to internal network as port 22 (standard ssh port). I have a ADSL 1024/256 connection. Otherwise, the connection is responsive, only ssh hangs.
The computer at work is running Fedora 13 (the bandwidth of my company is > 1Gb/s so this should not be a problem), while I also tried connecting from my Macbook pro running OS X Leopard 10.5.8 (from 56k modem). The result was the same slow and unresponsive connection.
As mentioned, latency is a likely suspect.
Use a sniffer. Watch what is going on and then you'll know. This isn't mystery science theater.
