I don't know for sure, but I think it's pretty likely, since otherwise there would have to be a warning in the NSXML documentation stating that it could only be used on the main thread. And I know of at least one OS-provided service (PubSub) that uses libxml2 that can be run on a background thread (and is, in Mail.)
