Hello, darwin-dev mailing list,
I have been experimenting with the darwin sources for quite a while now, and have been making progress with building a couple of key projects, such as dyld and libc (I hope to build a minimal Darwin OS using open source projects released by Apple, and hopefully turn my work into a guide for others to follow). My question is: are there any chances of more open-source darwin projects being released? Currently, there are a lot of projects, such as Libc, which depend on closed-source components like libxpc and its launchd, which would be crucial to make a functioning darwin system.
I know that a functioning darwin OS may not feasible anymore, due to availability of source code and/or kernel extensions (and that the open source code which has been released, may just be for people to audit or edit, but not to be used as parts of a standalone operating system), but it would be really great for both Apple and the open-source community if more key projects were released.
I know this probably sounds like I’m pleading a bit too much, but if someone could maybe refer this on to somebody at Apple who makes the decisions on which projects become open source, that’d be great. I’m sure that having the sources to projects like libxpc, libsystem_m, would be of a great use to the Darwin open-source community.
Thank you for reading this, and thank you Apple for releasing the source code of Darwin :),
Ethan
