You're right; the source is not easy to follow.
There are two other 'recvspace' values, one for TCP, one for that other
protocol:
net.inet.tcp.recvspace: 32768
net.inet.udp.recvspace: 42080
These act as defaults, and you can change them via setsockopt(). I
have this vestigial recollection that the max is limited, but I can't
find anyplace in the source where this is done, and the sysctl doesn't
complain if I set it to 1,000,000.
