NFDescriptor nf_handle

I've been looking at NKEs and the examples I've seen set a value for the NFDescriptor nf_handle member. I can't find any docs on this but assume its a globally unique identifier for the NKE. If so, do I request a suitable value through the http://developer.apple.com/datatype/creatorcode.html page? Or am I off track here?
