Because it _is_ the outlet of a modem. For several years now, Macs don't have serial ports. Some models allowed to replace the internal modem with a "stealth" card to get one but I can't tell exactly which models this are.

You have a Wintel background? Apple's Kernel Debug Kit and Technical Note 2023 come with a nice description how to set up two machine debugging Mac-like (via ethernet):
