Most scientfic programs, which I think Apple's 64-bit interfaces were
designed for, simply malloc up a bunch of memory. Eventually people
learn how large a problem they can run by trial and error. At least
that's what my wife (a PhD statistician) does with her programs.
Almost nobody but memory checkers would ask how much memory is
available and try to grab all of it.
I'm at least as irritated at the lack of full 64-bit support as you
are. I maintain OS-bypass network drivers, and I have to wire memory
from a anywhere in users address space. However, there's currently no
Apple supported for a driver to do that.
Cheers,
Drew
