We have plenty to spare...

 Some applications I see using recvmsg and others using recvfrom. 
Is there any norm and/or advantage to one call versus the other when it comes to receiving data from a network kext?

The choice depends on your style and the details of your application. If the differences discussed in the 'man recv' page aren't important to you, there should be no practical difference.
