You've made it to the linking phase, which is half the battle.
Correct, you should be using gcc 3.3 to compile most bits of the OS.
Did you do a "make clean" between your attempts to build with gcc 4.0
and gcc 3.3? I also suggest redirecting stdout and stderr to a log
file so you can go back and look for errors that may contribute to
the absence of these symbols.
