Please don't hijack threads: create a new message, do not reply and
then change the subject line. It fouls up threading, makes reading
these lists a problem, and possibly loses you readers (mailers that
thread will put your message in the 'panic' thread, and those not
interested will likely not read it).

There are several possibilities. The size you give is probably what
'ls' tells you, so that in itself isn't useful. You want to look at
'size' or 'otool' to get an idea of what the real difference is.
You may be building the kernel with a different compiler than that
used to produce the original; your small change may not be so small;
there may be pieces of the system that are not open source - if so,
you are missing them.
