Just to clarify...
Only I/O Kit KEXTs are automatically loaded by the system based on I/O Kit personality matching rules. Non-I/O Kit KEXTs like filesystem extensions and NKEs are not automatically loaded by the system: the developer has to provide some mechanism that ultimately invokes kextload.
I/O Kit KEXTs must be installed in /S/L/E to be automatically loaded: kextload doesn't look anywhere else by default. Other KEXTs can theoretically be located anywhere where the developer's loading mechanism (such as a startup item) can find it.
