There are instructions printed as you enter single-user mode, however
I find that
# mount /
is sufficient.

Hold down command-S during the boot chime, and keep it held until you
see the prompt.
Note that you will only have the root filesystem visible, and you
will have to remount it read/write before you can change anything.
