Does darwin have a mechanism for monitoring various performance

supported and custom performance counters.

Is there anything similar in Darwin?

Performance co-pilot, oss.sgi.com/projects/pcp has been ported and does pretty much what you want. Get the 2.5.99 version from the dev directory of the download area. There is a monitoring/graphing add available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pcpaddons/
