Was lsof also rebuilt during your rebuild?
Way back in the early 1990s we were using lsof embedded in an
application suite on SunOS computers, and kernel updates regularly
forced us to reinstall a freshly compiled version of lsof. It turns
out (15 years ago, anyways), lsof was very tightly tied to the
kernel's internal data structures.
