Binary driver licensing

  • Subject: Binary driver licensing

Hi,

With the release of Darwin 9 and the Darwin 9 source packages I am wondering if there is any plan to release some of the binary driver kernel extensions as prior Darwin releases have contained.

Right now, one must apparently purchase a copy of OS X to be able to run Darwin since several pretty key kernel extensions (e.g. the ACPI platform expert) are not part of the Darwin release. Prior Darwin releases included the binaries with a license to use them and redistribute them in the APPLE_DRIVER_LICENSE.txt file.

Is there any chance that these binaries will again be licensed for free use or is AppleI386GenericPlatform the only option now?

-Dave
