OK, this is almost certainly a known bug with the File Manager's file
ID tree management. The bug is fixed in 10.5 and a post-10.4.10
update to 10.4.x <rdar://problem/5223127>. The key characteristics
of this bug are:
o it messes up all File Manager clients (like Finder)
o it only affects non-volfs volumes
o it only affects Intel machines
If you're creating a network file system it usually possible to work
around this bug by careful manipulation of the dev_t that you use for
your volume. However, if you're doing a local file system (where the
dev_t is determined by the block device on which you're mounted)
there's no easy workaround.
