thanks for the quick response !
in trying to further debug the problem, I also noticed that the
AppleFireWireKDP.kext wasn't loading properly on the target machine. the
error message is as follows:
16AppleFireWireKDP is not compatible with its superclass, 9IOService
superclass changed?
so it seems like I may need a new AppleFireWireKDP.kext as well
