This may seem trivial to some. Recently I had to attempt a file recovery for a user that the Apple Guru people gave up on. Fortunately for the user, I was able to save their files to another hard drive. Then the rebuild of the structure was started, using the latest system. That part was file. But when I attempted the file copy back, all the 'hang ups' started. Finder's copy is lacking in many respects: 1-no ability to see what file is being copied (when it hangs, it would be good to know). 2-pressing the 'stop' button does not actually stop the copy process if it is in a hung state. 3-no indication of possible hung state is indicated (like errors in disk writes, etc.). 4-even a Force Quit does not work - no Force Quit window comes up when opt-cmd-esc is pressed. 5-it should have a <cmd-.> keyboard recognition, at least.
So I am in the midst of a file by file copy with power-restarts when it hangs. Very laborious as you can imagine. It's been 3 days now. And I don't have a clue as to what is wrong with the files that get 'hung'. I have used multiple hard drives as targets.
Any better ideas on how to proceed with some assurance? (all this may also be true under 10.4, though I don't have the patience to attempt it.) |
