If, like me, you value verbose tracing in your code, I cannot recommend FireLog highly enough.
It's very easy to build a custom structured logging system on top of it as well, so don't make the mistake of dismissing it as "just printf".

For more info on collecting kprintf over FireWire, see the man page for "fwkpfv". For more info on FireLog, please see the FireWire SDK. Tracepoints are quite useful, but they're somewhat complicated to implement.
