Hello,
I wonder if any of you who have built Darwin/XNU would be willing to
share your tool version numbers and configurations. I'm setting up
a variety of virtual machines to do regression testing of a headless
open-source software tool, and
darwin is giving me considerable grief.
There are XNU build instructions at http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/build/build.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000905-CH221-BEHJDFCA,
but after following a few of the steps I realized those instructions
are either stale or no longer feasible for lack of tool
availability.
I managed to install Darwin 8.0.1 with gcc 3.3 on a virtual machine
(from darwinx86-801.iso), and I have OS X 10.6.8 / Darwin 10.8.0
with gcc 4.2.1 and 4.5.2 on my desktop. The aforementioned XNU
build instructions tell me that I must use gcc 3.3, but that I also
need an SDK available. Some parts seem to require older versions of
Xcode that are no longer available on Apple's site. It's probably
not overly painful to build this if I can find the right
instructions and combination of tools. Can anybody offer any hints,
or point me to better documentation than I've been able to find so
far?
The immediate goal is to be able to build XNU, but the resulting OS
will also have to be able to run gcc >= 4.2.1, and Boost >= 1.37.0.
Regards,
Neil
