There used to be. First it was at http://devworld.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1113.html, then it moved to http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#qa/qa2001/qa1113.html. Now it appears to have been deleted altogether. That's probably because it is tainted by the evil carbon (everyone knows we have to reduce our carbon emissions, so please join me in congratulating Apple for once again being at the forefront of the revolution).
All I remember from that technote is that you shouldn't rely on the stuff under .vol and that it is mostly, if not completely, implementation-dependent on what it means or how it works.
Archive.org doesn't seem to have a copy of http://devworld.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1113.html, and the use of a #-mark in a url for something else than referring to an anchor appears to have resulted in archive.org never getting a copy of anything at all below http://developer.apple.com/library/mac (or at least it does not offer an easy way to get at that content if it did capture it).
Now please go play some Angry Birds and be a good iOS citizen. The management thanks you.
