IOMalloc / IOFree while holding a mutex

Hi,

I want to use IOMalloc in IOKit driver.
As mentioned in IOMalloc: "This function may block and so should not be called from interrupt level or while a simple lock is held".
As given in http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/synchronization/synchronization.html simple lock is spinlock. 

Can  I call IOMalloc / IOFree while holding mutex lock?
