Hi,
I'm using Yosemite and have a question about the com.apple.FinderInfo extended attribute. First I'm not certain if this is the right place to ask this question or not.
Is it an applications responsibility to create & write data to this attribute? Or is it the OS's responsibility to create & write data to the attribute?
The reason why I'm asking is I've noticed most of the apps native to Apple that create files seem to create and write data. Additionally third party apps such as MS Office etc all seem to have this extended attribute as well. However I have run into some things which create files that do not create this attribute. for example if i create a file with vi and save it. that file won't have the com.apple.FinderInfo associated with the file as an extended attribute. I have found a couple of third party apps that do do it as well.
If it is the applications responsibility, whats the best way to create this extended attribute without using xattr -w?
Thanks
GC
