That is worth the savings, through I have never tried subversion to
backup whole disks. It is possible without individually "checking
in" all the files one at a time. If I could script subversion to
back up disks and file structures that would be interesting.

Scripting isn't a problem, but the best way of doing it is probably going to be through FSVS (http://fsvs.tigris.org/). It is a filesystem (currently for linux only) that uses subversion as its backend. I have not played with it, so I have no idea if it is good, bad, or ugly. And the guy says it is linux only... but, if you REALLY want to do an entire disk at a time, it may be worth looking into.
