Merger? Is Sun even still around?
I would think that Apple brought the guy on because of his Google
ties... anymore it's like "Sun... who's that?".
Plus at WWDC Steve Jobs made a comment, his words were, "Microsoft
can only copy Google and Apple anymore."
I caught it immediately... the reference to Google that is. Google
will be the new leader, and with Apple's abilities putting Apple
touches on web based apps, well, that's the killer company... not Sun.
Dvorak has and always will be an old washed up idiot. Actually I
don't even think he can qualify for being washed up, because to be
washed up you have to have been something significant in the first
place, and I don't believe he has ever been significant for anything
except lining the bottom of my birdcage with his articles.
On to the comment of "next Apple CEO".... if Steve leaves (be it for
health reasons or other), Apple will fail. It did before, and it
would again. Microsoft is in a different boat because Bill Gates
hasn't really done anything to begin with.. yeah he manages, but he
just copies other technologies. Bill leaves MS.... who cares.
Steve on the other hand.... is what makes every part of Apple just
that - Apple.
Ever notice the inside of your PowerMac G5 or Intel iMac? It is a
work of art... the way things look, it is a work of art, and every
piece of everything Apple has had Steve behind it.
Sounds far fetched but it isn't. In 1984 when they were showing the
inside of the first Macintosh, Steve saw the circuit board and said,
"That is ugly!"... an engineer said "nobody will see it, nobody will
even know it's there.", with which Steve replied, "I know it's there,
re do it!"
Nobody will be able to replace him. Yeah Phil Schiller, Bertrand -
they are all great people, but they are guided and ultimately led by
Steve, who is one unique individual.
I just hope Steve's health is alright and he has no plans of leaving.

Is an Apple-Sun merger in the works?
Commentary: Why Apple really put Google's Schmidt on board
The speculation that Apple will buy Sun or Sun will buy Apple comes
around every so many years. This one seems to be more of a
positive speculations I have read on the topic.
... and I could be mistaken but I seem to recall that John Dvorak
is, like now, the frequent propagator of this speculation.
:-)
Light reading.
