Title: Re: [Fed-Talk] Mac Book Pro and a CAC reader
Nate,
two things that would be a huge help to DOD/IC customers would be:
- having an embedded smart card reader in all Macs – especially in the laptops.
- working with Microsoft to get Entourage to support CAC authentication when connecting to Exchange Webmail servers.

Lawrence,
I am the Manager for the DoD Team at Apple. I would like to have some of the technical guys address your needs, more on a one to one basis instead of talking generically on this talk list.
I have several concerns from your email. Please forward me the emails you sent to our security guys so I will have the time and nature of the emails. I will personally follow up with them.
Please feel free to contact any of the Army team directly with any questions.

Steven - Thanks for your reply.
I am not altogether pleased with Apple's claim that it is helping Federal customers with out-of-the-box support, it is no more out of the box than I am! Much easier on the PC. And does the Apple Federal Security team actually exist? I have sent a number of e-mails to them and never received a response.
I am getting nowhere with this Cherry, and I see a much nicer device is available from SCM Microsystems, their SCR331, http://www.scbsolutions.com/Brochures/SCR331.pdf. Their brochure indicates Apple support, OS X, and it says it is CCID compliant. It would appear to be plug and play. It is also much more compact than this Cherry.
I have found sources available for $20 on the web from thenerds.net and $25 from scbsolution.com; not sure which is best.
I have sent email to SCM Microsystems asking if they can send me further information about testing and Mac certification, we'll see what they say. If I can drop $20 for a compact reader than simply WORKS - then I'll have no complaints. But I wish Apple would stand behind its statement that it is helping Federal customers - haven't helped me much so far!

While there is a generic list of vendors at http://www.apple.com/itpro/federal/
One might wonder why these CAC readers aren't available for purchase at the Apple Store, as well as simple CAC 101 guides from Apple Federal.
Making iPhoto books on a Mac is easy. Burning a CD of my favorite music with iTunes is easy. Regular IMAP email and even Exchange on a Mac is easy.
Having a holistic solution with DoD CAC cards on a Mac (signing and encrypting email with Mail and Entourage, website authentication using CAC with both Safari and Firefox) is still Black Magic.
-buy a Mac Professional product
-buy a compatible CAC reader
-configure Mac for CAC usage
-having a user actually use their CAC

Is there a definitive guide located anywhere for getting CAC readers to work on the Mac Book Pro, and are there recommendations for CAC readers that work natively maybe?
