To whomever can assist:
I have a PowerBook G4 17" w/1.5GB RAM/80GB HD and a Verizon Wireless
Broadband card that I use for Internet Access. That said, I would like to be
able to access at the minimum webmail.nmci.navy.mil, and at the most be able
to POP/IMAP my email with an appropriate email client. I have successfully
setup the CAC Readers on PCs, but have been struggling to use a CAC reader
on the Mac. I called NMCI Support Help Desk, and they told me that a Mac is
not supported on the NMCI network.
The NMCI Help Desk claimed they do not support Apples, but I find that will
likely be incorrect, as I investigate to see if the NMCI contract actually,
in fact, precludes supporting Macintoshes.
The SPAWAR PKI Help Desk was equally unhelpful, claiming that the current
version of ActivCard that is licensed by the Navy does not work with MacOS
10.4, but that the version the Navy Reserve had given out at one point was
not ever licensed properly!
I am sure you can see the frustration growing now, yeah?
I have been a Unix System Administrator, Programmer, and Network Manager for
over 26 years, as I started in computers at age 14, and as well have held an
Amateur Radio License (General) since 1988. I am not trying to brag, just to
say that I don't fit into the sometimes presumed "he has a Mac, he must be a
simpleton with computers" demographic, and that my failure to make this work
has not been due to a lack of technical prowess.
Is there a FAQ or HOW-TO on how to make this work? I cannot find much info
or help in a step-by-step basis on how to make an easy technology like PKI
work. I have also only been around the MacOS X since the time frame of about
NOV 2004, so I am new to the Keychain and how to use it right as well.
Thanks in advance.
